So You've Applied to be a Member
You've sent an application and are wondering what happens next. Here's the run down:
- The Secretary receives your application and checks it for completeness. If it passes, it is forwarded to the other Board members and you are added to the mailing lists (snail mail and email, if you have email capability). If it doesn't pass, the Secretary will contact you for the missing information.
- Now that you're on the roster as an applicant, you may participate in almost all PRP activities. You are welcome to attend any PRP event, especially workshops and including non-costume events like the Plastic Pirate Party and the annual membership meeting; but because you aren't yet a member, you cannot vote on items of club business (such as the calendar, changes to the Policies & Procedures, or Board elections). On occasion, there may be activities where priority will be given to members in good standing; but for the most part, applicants may participate in anything open to members.
- The next step is the audition, although not in the traditional theatrical sense. The PRP audition consists of you coming to your choice of one or more costume events and playing with us. We will then meet you and see if you're a good fit for the group; and you will be able to determine for yourself if we're the type of group you want to join. Review the Event Calendar (either in the newsletter or on our Events page online) and contact the Event Coordinator to let us know which event(s) you've chosen.
- The Board will meet to compare notes and consider input about applicants from current members. After the Board determines that you've auditioned successfully, you will be invited to join as a full member. You will be asked to submit first year's dues ($30/individual, $40 for two members at one address and $10 for each additional member at the same address) and two forms for club records: an emergency information form and a participant's waiver/agreement form.
Members in good standing (i.e., dues paid) are eligible to participate in any and all club activities and have full voting rights in accordance with PRP's Policies & Procedures.
Note that the Board is authorized by PRP's Policies & Procedures to waive the audition process at its discretion. That is usually based on the applicant being vouched for by one or more trustworthy members, or other criteria as the Board sees fit.
Applicants and new members should visit our web site and view all the helpful information there: the Policies & Procedures, Port Royal Privateers 101, costuming advice, etc. If you then have specific questions, you should contact a Board member, who will either be able to answer your questions, or will be able to put you in contact with the right person (e.g., a costumer, a historian, a weapons expert).
